National Archives History Office Internship Program

The National Archives History Office preserves and promotes the understanding of the history of the National Archives. Student interns will assist the History Office by performing primary source research at the National Archives in Washington, DC and College Park, MD; developing content for the National Archives website and social media; assisting with the National Archives oral history program; and providing general support to the National Archives History Office.
Students interested in an internship with the National Archives History Office must submit the following:

  • cover letter explaining your interest in the internship
  • résumé
  • one letter of recommendation
  • college transcript (official or unofficial)
  • short writing sample

Deadlines:

  • Spring: November 1
  • Summer: March 1
  • Fall: July 1

All internship applicants must be U.S. Citizens. Applicants must also be currently enrolled and in good standing in an accredited college or university. Preference is given to scholars currently enrolled in graduate-level programs related to history, public history, or archival studies and upper-level undergraduate students majoring in history or related fields requiring strong research and writing skills.
Internships are unpaid and housing is not provided. A security clearance is required. In order to obtain a security clearance, all selected candidates must pass a background check.
All applicants must provide the National Archives History Office with all required documentation no later than the posted deadline for each semester period.
