Women in World War I

The role of women during World War I will be the focus of this fall film series. The National Archives – Central Plains Region and the National World War I Museum are presenting the following films free to the public. Each film will be introduced by a film or history scholar.

Saturday (only), September 27, 2008 at 1:00 p.m.
“The Little American” (1917) This silent film features a young American (Mary Pickford) whose ship was torpedoed by a German U-boat, but makes it back to ancestral home in France, where she witnesses German brutality firsthand.

Friday, October 10, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. & Saturday, October 11, 2008 at 1:00 p.m.
“Mata Hari” (1931) In 1917 Paris the famous dancer Mata Hari (Greta Garbo) has a double life as a German spy, obtaining secrets from French and Russian officers in the bedroom.

“Darling Lili” (1970) A musical version of the “Mata Hari” story starring Julie Andrews and Rock Hudson.

“Nurse Edith Cavell” (1939) Based on the real-life story of English nurse Edith Cavell (Anna Neagle) and her efforts to help soldiers escape.

Friday, November 21, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. & Saturday, November 22, 2008 at 1:00 p.m.
“Iron Jawed Angels” (2004) Based on the life and work of suffragists Alice Paul (Hilary Swank) and Carrie Chapman Catt (Anjelica Huston) and their differing tactics used to persuade President Woodrow Wilson that suffrage was a war measure.

The Central Plains Region is one of 14 facilities nationwide where the public has access to Federal archival records. It is home to more than 43,000 cubic feet of historical records dating from the 1820s to the 1990s created or received by nearly 100 Federal agencies. The Central Plains Region houses records from the states of Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, and South Dakota. The facility is located at 2312 E.
