American Military Cemeteries Abroad:
Brookwood, Surrey, England In 1923 Congress created the American Battle Monuments
Commission to build and maintain memorials in the United States and foreign
countries where American Armed Forces had served since 1917. Congress
later gave the commission responsibility for maintaining burial grounds
in foreign countries and for designing and constructing memorials at these
cemeteries. The design for the American Cemetery and Memorial at Brookwood,
Surrey, England, was completed in 1927. In the design, four small plots
are arranged around a flagpole. A classically designed white stone chapel
sits on the northwest side of the cemetery. The site is only 4 1/2 acres
and sits in the midst of a civilian cemetery. It contains the remains
of 468 American war dead.
