Tunnels and Bridges for New York:
East River Tunnel This drawing shows the interior arrangements for
a proposed tunnel under the East River to connect the cities of New York
and Brooklyn. It was to have a carriageway in the center flanked by railways
and footpaths. The proposed toll charges would be no more than 1 cent
per pedestrian, 3 cents per head for cattle and horses, 5 cents for each
saddle horse and rider, and 6 cents for a single wagon and horse. Today
tunnels link various parts of New York City, but this tunnel was never
built.
