Standards for Background Investigations

The following investigative standards are established for all United States Government civilian and military personnel, consultants, contractors, employees of contractors, licensees, certificate holders or grantees and their employees and other individuals who require access to classified information, to include Sensitive Compartmented Information and Special Access Programs.

Policy Documents

Under Executive Order 13526, "Classified National Security Information" (PDF Format) and Executive Order 12829, as amended, "National Industrial Security Program," ( PDF Format) ISOO oversees the security classification programs in both Government and industry and reports annually to the President on their status. ISOO monitors approximately 65 executive branch departments, independent agencies and offices, and their major components.
