Who is Eligible for Student Employment.
The Mid Atlantic region invites students of all disciplines to submit applications for employment. Individuals are eligible for student employment if they meet the definition of student. Students are those who are enrolled or accepted for enrollment in an accredited high school, technical or vocational school, 2-year or 4-year college or university, graduate or professional school. The student must be taking at least a half-time course load and must be a U.S citizen. Once an individual ceases to be a student, he or she is no longer eligible for employment and must be separated.
The Mid Atlantic Region offers employment for students under the Student Temporary Employment Program. Students may be appointed to this program if they are pursuing an educational program from the High School through the post-graduate level with at least a half-time course load.
Under the Student Temporary Employment Program, the student is appointed for a period not-to-exceed 1 year. The appointment may be extended without limitation provided the student continues to meet the definition of student. There are no specific requirements in regard to the academic program being pursued.
Under either program, the student's work schedule may be full-time or part-time provided the schedule does not interfere with the student's academic program. Although part-time work is generally between 16 and 32 hours a week, students may be scheduled to work as few as 1 hour per week.
Rate of pay will range between GS-2 and GS-4 grade levels and will be determined through an applicant crediting process. 2006 Federal employee pay tables and locality pay tables can be found at http://www.opm.gov/oca/06tables/html/phl.asp
There is no requirement for issuing a public notice or following competitive examining procedures (i.e., rating and ranking of applicants). No written test is required at grades GS-2 through GS-4. Selection decisions should be based on job related requirements. Veterans preference does apply.
Students in the temporary employment program may enroll in the health benefits program once they have been continuously employed for a year but must pay 100 percent of the premium (i.e., the employee and the government share). Temporary students are not eligible for life insurance.
The authority for the student employment program is found in 5 CFR 213.3202(c) and (d).
Student employment can be arranged anytime during the year, and there is no application deadline. Interested students should submit six documents:
- Resume, detailing education and work experience
- School verification letter
- Copy of his/her official transcript(s). This helps determine grade eligibility.
- Form OF-306, declaration for Federal Employment
- Form SF-181, Race and National Origin Identification
