President Abrahan Lincoln Signs National Academy of Science Charter in 1863
President Abraham Lincoln signs the charter of the National Academy of Sciences in 1863. Joseph Henry, depicted third from the left in this 1924 painting by Albert Herter, and the most famous American scientist of the 19th century, was instrumental in the Academy's establishment.
