Documentary Editing Superlatives

The Illinois State Historical Society has presented its 1997 Superior Achievement Award to the Jane Addams Papers Project for its 1996 publication The Jane Addams Papers: A Comprehensive Guide, edited by Mary Lynn McCree Bryan, Nancy Slote, and Maree de Angury (Bloomington, IN: Indiana University Press), ISBN 0-253-21036-4. The guide constitutes a detailed index of Addams' writings and correspondence, two parts of the 82-reel microfilm edition of her papers released by the project in 1985. The Jane Addams Papers Project has also won the Western Association of Women Historians' 1997 Barbara Penny Kanner Award for excellence in bibliomethodology.

The Webwatch column in the September 1, 1997, issue of Library Journal reviewed the web site of the Freedmen and Southern Society Project, http://www.inform.umd.edu/ARHU/ Depts/History/Freeman/home.html, as part of a survey of web sites on slavery. Columnist Thomas Jay Kemp praised the site, developed by project editor Leslie S. Rowland, as "the best organized source from which to hear the original voices of slaves and freedmen/women." Annotation congratulates Dr. Rowland and the project staff on this well-deserved mark of recognition, which demonstrates that technological advances can enhance public access to source materials at all levels.
