Notice to Researchers:
Availability of Naturalization Records
The National Archives at New York City is the repository for naturalization records filed in Federal courts in New Jersey, New York, and Puerto Rico from 1795 to 1991. Most of our records have been microfilmed and are available in our self-service research room. Records that have not been microfilmed can be requested at our Reference Desk.
Some of our naturalization records were recently digitized or microfilmed to help preserve and make them more widely available. In anticipation of their availability in other formats, we have moved the original records to our offsite storage facility and are unable to access these records immediately. These records include:
- Petitions for Naturalization Filed in Federal, State, and Local Courts, 1795-1906
- Petitions for Naturalization Filed in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York, 1937-1957
- Petitions for Naturalization Filed in the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York, 1944-1946
We expect that these collections will be available in our research room in May 2013. Researchers who need these records can arrange to have copies made and shipped to their home or place of business in about 10 business days.
We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause our researchers.
