The White House Years

Rock-and-roll star Elvis Presley requested a meeting with President Nixon on December 21, 1970 to discuss his interest in becoming personally involved with the fight against drugs – this encounter became an iconic moment in American history.   They are shown here in the Oval Office of the White house shaking hands.

A large oil spill in Santa Barbara, CA in 1969 provided the catalyst for President Nixon’s environmental policy.  In this photograph from December 31, 1970, President Nixon signs the Clean Air Act as the first Environmental Protection Agency Administrator William Ruckelshaus and the Council on Environmental Quality Chairman Russell Train look on.

With rains threatening to postpone what would be one of the first Rose Garden weddings at the White House, a break in the weather allowed sufficient time for President Richard Nixon’s eldest daughter Tricia to marry Edward Finch Cox.  This photograph shows President Nixon as he escorts his daughter down the aisle, June 12, 1971.

In between deliberations, the Nixons visited the country.  Photographed are President and Mrs. Nixon at the fabled Great Wall of China which was built over 2,000 years ago and extending over 3,600 miles, February 24, 1972.

President Nixon working in his office at the Executive Office Building, January 17, 1974.  On that day the President announced that at a Geneva Conference, the Governments of Egypt and Israel, with assistance from the United States, had achieved an agreement to disengage and separate their military forces in Sinai.
