Fire at National Archives Suitland Facility

College Park, MD

At 2:30 P.M. on Tuesday, February 29, a fire of undetermined origin began in a stack area at the Washington National Records Center, a storage facility operated at the National Archives and Records administration, in Suitland, MD. The fire was completely contained in the stack area. Portions of three rows of records were affected. The smoke detectors and sprinkler system worked as designed. National Archives staff is in the process of evaluating the damage, working with the fire department to determine the cause of the fire.
