National Archives Dedicates New Records Center Facility Near Dayton, OH

Dayton, OH. . .The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) will dedicate its new Great Lakes Region Kingsridge records center facility at 8801 Kingsridge Drive, Dayton, OH, with a grand opening ceremony on Thursday, October 9, 2003, at 11 am. The media is invited to cover the ceremony. The opening will feature a ribbon cutting, tours, educational displays, and remarks by NARA officials and local political leaders.

The 217,000 square foot facility will employ 45 staff, and can host 30 visitor researchers. Its five bays can accommodate 1.2 million cubic feet of records. The Kingsridge building is one of four NARA facilities in the Dayton area that provide storage for Federal records, bringing the projected total capacity for the region to nearly 4 million cubic feet.

Commenting on the new facility, Archivist of the United States John Carlin stated, "NARA's new modern facility at Kingsridge will enable our Dayton Records Center to more effectively serve the Federal agencies in the Great Lakes region. The facility will provide state-of-the-art storage and service for agencies whose volumes of paper-based records are still increasing."

The facility was built primarily to store and service approximately 540 million tax returns for the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Plans for the development of the Kingsridge facility were made when the IRS, Dayton's single largest customer, reorganized its system of processing tax records. This reorganization resulted in a very large increase in the volume of IRS documents to be stored in the Dayton records centers. The IRS stores a total of 1.8 million cubic feet of records in NARA's Dayton facilities.

The Kingsridge facility will provide efficient service to Federal customers while ensuring the security of the records it houses. State-of-the-art features of the new facility include:

  • A high-tech security system, including motion detectors, perimeter cameras, and fire safety improvements
  • Instant access to customer records through NARA's intranet
  • Innovative building design that facilitates records retrieval and prompt shelving of record transfers from other sites
  • Computer-controlled access to facilities to enhance the safety of employees
  • Full compliance with the provisions of 36 CFR 1228 Subpart K, the Federal regulation that sets facilities standards to ensure protection of Federal records from threats such as fire, theft, pests, floods and natural disasters

In addition to the IRS holdings, Dayton's major Federal customers include the Defense Finance and Accounting Service, Housing and Urban Development, and United States Army Commands. The region also serves 70 other agencies including the Department of Homeland Security, the Federal Reserve Bank, the Department of Energy, the Department of the Air Force, and the United States Bankruptcy Courts.

The Kingsridge facility brings together an award-winning team of records management professionals. Records Center Director David Cornelisse stated, "The Dayton staff won the Archivist's Achievement Award in 2001 for accomplishing over 4.7 million file actions, 50% more than their previous peak volume. There is a wonderful work ethic among the employees in this region."

The National Archives and Records Administration has provided comprehensive records management support and archival guidance and services to the Federal Government since 1934. With the opening of the first records center in 1950, NARA has developed its records center system into a national network of sixteen facilities, storing and providing access to 21 million boxes of records.

NARA's Records Center Program is dedicated to providing superior records storage, access, and disposition services. This integrated approach yields great benefits to customers, as NARA is an active participant in the life cycle of Federal records from their creation through their disposition. The program is administered by a professional staff that is familiar with Federal agencies, Federal records, and Federal records management needs.
