Small Fire at the National Archives Building

Washington, DC…A small mechanical fire broke out at the National Archives Building at 1:22 PM on Monday, November 14, 2005. The fire, which was caused by an overheated elevator motor in a machine room on the east side of the building, was quickly contained. An initial survey by National Archives conservators has determined that approximately 100 boxes where records were stored in a small area of the building have sustained water damage. It appears, however, the contents of the boxes have not been affected.

The fire triggered the sprinkler system, immediately extinguishing the flames. The sprinklers remained on for approximately 12 minutes.

National Archives Building security and facilities staff, along with fire department officials, launched an immediate survey to ensure the safety of the affected area.

The National Archives research rooms and public exhibition areas will reopen to visitors on Tuesday morning.
