National Archives Presents Panel Discussion on The National Woman’s Party and Political Rhetoric on August 25, 2011
Press Release · Thursday, June 30, 2011

Washington, DC

On Thursday, August 25, at 7 p.m., the National Archives commemorates the 91st anniversary of the signing of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution—giving women the right to vote—with a special panel discussion on the National Woman’s Party’s (NWP) use of persuasive language and imagery to secure suffrage. The program is presented in partnership with the Sewall-Belmont House & Museum and will feature examples from their Nina Allender collection of political cartoons.

This program is free and open to the public, and will take place in the William G. McGowan Theater of the National Archives Building in Washington, DC, located on the National Mall at Constitution Ave. and 7th Street, NW. Attendees should enter through the Special Events entrance. Metro accessible on the Yellow and Green lines, Archives/Navy Memorial/Penn Quarter station.

Program attendees will hear from panelists Lisa Kathleen Graddy of the National Museum of American History and Dr. Kyle Ciani, Associate Professor of History, Illinois State University, on the ways in which the National Woman’s Party utilized various forms of rhetoric to engage and persuade the public and elected officials to support women’s right to vote. Ms. Graddy will examine the banners carried in suffrage parades and during the NWP’s pickets in front of the Whites House. Attendees will see the tactics and strategies employed by the NWP during the campaign for the right to vote, and the escalation of the messaging as the U.S. entered World War I. Dr. Ciani will examine the Nina Allender cartoons featured on the covers of The Suffragist, the weekly periodical of the National Woman’s Party. The Allender cartoons show the persuasive abilities of the NWP to control and distribute a particular campaign message and imagery garnering support for suffrage.

The National Archives is fully accessible. To request an accommodation (e.g., sign language interpreter) for a public program please email public.program@nara.gov or call 202-357-5000 two weeks prior to the event to ensure proper arrangements are secured.
