MEMORANDUM TO FEDERAL AGENCY RECORDS CONTACTS: Update to NARA's General Records Schedules (GRS)

On April 19, 2010, NARA completed an update to its General Records Schedules (GRS). These changes are described in GRS Transmittal Number 22, which may be found on the NARA web site at: http://www.archives.gov/records-mgmt/grs/grs-trs22.html.

The recent changes to the GRS include:

  • adding citations to schedule items showing their origin and authority;
  • expanding GRS 24 to include disposition instructions for Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) records in item 13;
  • updating the GRS, where applicable, to indicate current Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) citations in accordance with the revised records management regulations published in 36 CFR chapter XII, Subchapter B, on November 2, 2009; and
  • removing items at the end of each schedule for e-mail and word processing copies, which were added to the GRS in Transmittal Number 8.

All of NARA's approved General Records Schedules are available at: http://www.archives.gov/records-mgmt/grs/.

If you have any questions about these changes to the GRS, please contact your appraiser who can provide any additional information you might need. If you do not know who your assigned appraiser is, you will find a list of the appraisal and scheduling work group and regional contacts on the NARA website at http://www.archives.gov/records-mgmt/appraisal/.
