Records of the Former United States Information Agency (RG 306)

Accessioned were 18,300 audiotapes of recordings made or acquired by the Voice of America (VOA) Tape Library, in English, from 1955 to 1981 (with gaps). These recordings were stored in the VOA Tape Library and were used by VOA producers and VOA Language Divisions as documentary and actuality coverage of speeches, remarks, and press conferences by U.S. Government leaders and other world leaders and dignitaries, as well as radio coverage from other sources of historical events, topics, and radio programming that could be used and incorporated into VOA edited broadcast programs, both in English and other languages. This accession is an accretion to previous transfers from the VOA Tape Library and continues the chronological sequence from 1942 to 1981. Included as an agency finding aid is 5 cubic feet of "VOA Daily Log Sheets" arranged by date from January 1, 1968, through December 31, 1986, that lists recording titles and the file number assigned as logged into the VOA Tape Library. Received from the National Geophysical Data Center of the National Environmental Satellite, Data and Information Service, were 22 posters that provide geophysical information about Earth, 1993 - 2001. This series of posters consists of geophysical wall charts and posters arranged into five subject categories: Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) images; GEOSAT (Geodetic Satellite) data images such as a poster that features an illustrative estimate of seafloor topography that was obtained from shipboard depth soundings and combined with gravity date derived from satellite altimetry to produce a grid representation for all ice-free ocean areas; wall charts related to the Great Lakes featuring a colored bathymetric map that can be viewed in three-dimensional form; global images and wall charts which features a "Revised Surface of the Earth" poster produced as a computer-generated image from digital databases of land seafloor elevations in three-dimensional form; and posters that illustrate various types of volcanoes. Received from the Central Imagery Processing and Reference Division were 4,368 cans of unclassified and declassified aerial photography (655,200 images) gathered from U.S. military sources and covering United States and foreign geographic areas. These 17 transfers are accretions to previous accessions in this series dating from the 1940s to the 1960s. The aerial photography consists of vertical and oblique sequential photographic negatives in roll format. The photography was obtained by DIA from USAF and USN components involved in reconnaissance and mapping projects. Materials open and processed. Accessions NN3-373-01-001 to 017.
