Presidential Libraries

ACCESSIONS

Herbert Hoover Library

The archives added three small collections this quarter: Richard Adamiak's oral history interview with Kenneth Colegrove, a Helen White letter seeking support for Daughters of the American Revolution marker on the Hoover site, and Rosalie Ashton materials documenting her work on a film of the Commission for Relief in Belgium. The library acquired 22 periodicals and 3 books.

Richard and Margaret Hoover Brigham's bequest was received which included: a reproduction of the James Monroe desk, a reproduction Monroe bureau, a painting of Minerva, a tabletop chest used on Hoover's 1928 Latin America tour, four Hepplewhite-style chairs used in the Hoover White House, a fire screen with needlepoint by Lou Henry Hoover, a desk used by Hoover as Secretary of Commerce, a sketch portrait of Hoover by Josiah C. Chase, a copy of the De Laszlo portrait of Lou Henry Hoover by Richard Marsden Brown, and Hoover's walking stick. A large doll house with furnishings commissioned by First Lady Lou Henry Hoover was formally donated after being on long-term loan. A small collection of materials was transferred from archival collections to museum collections.

Franklin D. Roosevelt Library

The FDR Library accessioned 7.721 cubic feet of new archival acquisitions this quarter. Among the donations received are the Papers of Paul P. Gourrich, the director of the Research Division of the Securities and Exchange Commission during the Roosevelt administration (gift of Dorothy Gourrich). The library also received from Dr. Steven Lomazow additional Roosevelt-related printed materials, photographs, sound recordings, and other ephemera collected by him. Along with the archival materials, Dr. Lomazow also donated several unique objects that will be transferred to the museum collection, including a painted FDR clock; a memorial statue to Chicago Mayor Anton Cermak, who was killed in the February 1933 assassination attempt on FDR's life; and a plaque and champagne bottle from the launch of the Liberty ship Marguerite LeHand, which was named after FDR's longtime personal secretary.

Fifteen objects were acquired and accessioned during the second quarter. These consist of campaign and World War I and World War II–related buttons (donated by Jill Spiller).

Harry S. Truman Library

The library acquired an accretion to the Sermon Family Papers (formerly the Papers of Roger T. Sermon, Sr. and Roger T. Sermon, Jr.): a scrapbook of press clippings, photographs, programs, certificates, cards, brochures, and correspondence concerning Mayor William H. Sermon of Independence, MO, and city affairs in 1959. This accretion is closed pending processing.

The library acquired small accretions to the Papers of John B. Moullette and the Miscellaneous Historical Documents Collection (MHDC). These accretions have been opened for research.

During the second quarter, seventy seven objects were accessioned. This material included important White House automobile-related items originally acquired by Secret Service agent Morgan L. Gies and a small collection of Truman medallic art presented by the family of Hy Vile.

Dwight D. Eisenhower Library

The library accessioned 2,801 photographs and 63 original digital photographs, Papers of Nellie Eileen Richardson. The museum accessioned a total of 29 items this quarter, primarily from library collections.

John F. Kennedy Library

Accretion to the Philip Caper Personal Papers (#388). Material regarding Caper's work with Senator Edward M. Kennedy on the 1973 HMO bill, as well as other related health care issues. 5.385 cubic feet. Closed pending processing.

Accretion to the Donated Personal Stock Film Collection (#5007). Box is marked in pencil "President and Kam Day Parade 1963". President Kennedy is seen traveling in an open car in a motorcade, wearing a lei in Honolulu, HI, June 9, 1963, for +/- 15 seconds. The remainder of the film shows the procession and floats of the King Kamehameha Day Parade in Honolulu on June 11, 1963, and children playing near a fountain, also presumably in Honolulu. One 3" (50') reel, Kodachrome II 8mm motion picture film (+/-03:35) in original Kodak box and one DVD transfer. Open.

Richard Drayne Personal Papers (#389). Materials related to Edward M. Kennedy, regarding speeches, Chappaquiddick, Kennedy's 1980 Presidential campaign, and other subjects; materials related to Robert F. Kennedy regarding his 1968 campaign (mostly travel schedules) and his funeral; materials related to Kennedy family events, including Rory Kennedy's baptism, Kathleen Kennedy's wedding, and the USS JFK christening ceremony; materials related to Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, including handwritten notes on the roles of Ambassador Kennedy's grandchildren at his funeral and a letter to Richard Drayne thanking him for an unspecified kindness; Shriver campaign items; and miscellaneous photos 2.154 cubic feet. closed pending processing.

Accretion to the Hemingway Miscellaneous Accessions Collection (#372). "Hemingway in Cuba: A Docudrama Film" co-produced and copy donated by Stan Salett (DVD). 1 disc. Open.

Accretion to the John F. Kennedy Oral History Collection. Oral Histories with John A. Carver, Jr. (1918– ), lawyer, government official. Assistant Secretary of the Interior for Public Lands Management (1961–64.) Ten oral histories in total, 484 pages. Closed pending processing.

Four accretions to the John F. Kennedy Tributes Collection (#322): Three programs from the "John F. Kennedy Commemorative Service & Prayer Vigil" on November 22, 2013, in Glenville, WV, and two copies of the Glennville Pathfinder newspaper, from November 21, 2013. 1 folder. Open.

Poem and song, "Burns the Eternal Torch" written by Marjorie D. Beckwith in 1964. 1 item. Open.

Letters from the donor’s family; letters from Eleanor Qualey McMahon (mother) written on November 22, 1963, November 26, 1963, November 28, 1963; letter from Joseph P. McMahon (father) written on November 23, 1963; card from Muriel Qualey (aunt) referring to Cushing eulogy; card from Dorothy Qualey Travers (aunt) on November 23, 1963. 1 folder. Open.

Essay written about President Kennedy's assassination from Rosemary Keough Remond Kerrebrock who was a freshman at Manhattanville College, who later worked on Robert Kennedy's senate campaign and senate staff in 1967. 1 folder. Open.

Accretion to the Miscellaneous Photographic Accessions Collection (#5013). Seven 3.5" x 5" black-and-white photograph prints, one 5" x 7" duplicate print, President Kennedy at airfield, Boca Chica Naval Air Station, Key West, FL, March 26, 1961, for meetings with Prime Minister Harold Macmillan of Great Britain. Prime Minister Macmillan can be seen in one (possibly two) of the images. Images made by donor. 8 photographs. Open.

Four accretions to the Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Collection (#184):

  • Wessel, David H. (1962–64): Oral history interview. David Wessel served as a Peace Corps volunteer as a member of Colombia 2, in a rural community development project. The first Peace Corps volunteer from Louisiana, he worked in the Department of Antioquia in a mountainous area of Colombia where his projects included organizing a tomato-growers' cooperative, setting up a town library, and building schools. After service, he worked for a while as a Peace Corps recruiter. He has remained involved in the NPCA and in the Colombia Support Network. Interviewed by Phyllis Noble, February 4, 2014. 2 tapes.   • Bennett, Harry E. (2002–2004): Oral history interview. Harry Bennett served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Belize in a sustainable agriculture, rural community development project. He and his wife joined the Peace Corps when he was age 53, after 30 years of living and working on an organic farm in Kansas. His Peace Corps projects in Belize provided an excellent opportunity to combine his university studies in business with his long experience in farming. He worked with Mayan subsistence farmers in projects to supplement their family farming with cooperative efforts to bring in cash. A project to grow hot chili peppers failed when their market disappeared, but a subsequent project to grow cacao in the rainforest was successful, and at the time of the interview remains healthy.   • Ott, Betsy (2009–2012): Oral history interview. Betsy Ott served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Ukraine in a TEFL program (Teaching English as a Foreign Language). Her mother was a Peace Corps volunteer in Ecuador. Before joining the Peace Corps, she spent a year studying abroad in the Czech Republic and volunteering with Green Peace. As a PCV in a small city in Ukraine, her experience was so successful that she extended for a third year. Interviewed by Phyllis Noble, February 24, 2014. 2 tapes. Open.
  • Materials related to George N. Bond's experience as a Peace Corps volunteer (Somalia I, 1962–64): Peace Corps training materials, materials on Somalia I, personal correspondence, diaries, day books, travel documents, two ink drawings, and other materials. 1.008 cubic feet. Closed pending processing.

>Hemingway Collection
Accretion to the Ernest Hemingway Collection (#104) of Advanced Galley Proofs for The Old Man and the Sea and God Rest Yee Merry Gentleman, a limited edition printing of 300.

An additional 500 digital images (from four scrapbooks) were received from the Finca Vigia Foundation; they are in the process of being incorporated into the collection and the finding aid. Worked with a photographer to photograph and create museum-quality prints of five paintings in the Hemingway Room for the Finca Vigia in Cuba. The prints will be a gift of Angela Hemingway.

Lyndon Baines Johnson Library

The library accessioned Personal Papers collections belonging to the following individuals:

Chester L. Cooper, consisting of 0.46 cubic feet of material, an accretion to Cooper's papers already housed at the library. Cooper served on the National Security Council from 1964 to 1966; was an assistant to Averell Harriman on Vietnam, 1966–67; and was the author of the study of the Vietnam War, The Lost Crusade; Robert L. Hardesty, consisting of 3.68 cubic feet of material is the fourth accretion to Hardesty's papers since they were originally deposited at the library. Hardesty was a speechwriter and special aide to President Johnson from 1965 to 1972, assisted Speaker of the House Carl Albert on the 1972 Democratic congressional campaigns, was named by President Gerald Ford to the Board of Governors of the United States Postal Service, and served as the President of Southwest Texas State University from 1981 to 1988. He also assisted President Johnson with preparing the manuscript of material later published as The Vantage Point, his memoir of his Presidency.

The library accessioned the oral history transcripts of the following individuals: John Holton, long-time administrative assistant to Congressman Sam Rayburn, 1939–61, 26 pages; J.J. "Jake" Pickle, a long-time friend and political supporter of LBJ, staff member under Johnson in the National Youth Administration, and U.S. Congressman representing Texas's 10th District, 1963–95, 19 pages.

The Audiovisual Archives Department accessioned 1 LGA-S box of photographic material containing .504 cubic feet of material. The Technical Services Department produced seven video DVDs (.028 cubic feet) and one contact sheet binder of material for ongoing documentation of the LBJ Library's public programs. AV also accessioned eight DVDs into the Technical Services Video collection. The Audiovisual Archivist accessioned materials transferred from Textual Archives collections including eight audio reels from the Papers of Homer Thornberry, three audio reels from the Papers of William McChesney Martin, and a reel from WHCF, Oversized Attachment 1707, and a tape of a speech President Johnson made in Dallastown, PA, from the Papers of John Dorsey, providing 0.18 cubic feet of audio accessions. Total AV accessions and acquisitions: .2692 cubic feet.

Richard Nixon Library

The library received an accretion to the Frost-Nixon Interview Collection this quarter. The Nixon Foundation signed an amendment to the deed of gift for the collection, which transferred the remainder of the collection to the library. This material includes additional draft transcripts of the interviews conducted by David Frost between March 23 and April 20 of 1977, the briefing books and other materials created to prepare the President for the interviews, and President Nixon's handwritten notes on a variety of topics.

Gerald R. Ford Library

The library completed work for three accessions to the Composite General Accessions collection this quarter. These accessions contain material related to the unveiling event for the model U.S.S. Gerald R Ford (CVN 78), Gerald Ford's Centennial Birthday celebration, and political clippings, books and 1973 inaugural material donated by Samuel Solomon (14.1 cubic feet).

Jimmy Carter Library

The Library continues to receive material from President Cater's office. The library also received 2.5 cubic ft. of Betty Rainwater's material. Mrs. Rainwater worked in the Georgia Govrnor's press office and had a similar role in the 1976 Presidential campaign.

George Bush Library

The Textual Archives did not receive any accessions during the quarter.

The Audiovisual Department received three photo albums, 67 photographic and no video additions to the Post-Presidential Collection from the Office of George Bush. The AV staff processed one DVD and three photographs of Donated Historical Materials and received four FOIA transfers and eight archival transfers.

This quarter, the Collections Department accessioned eight artifacts, including two archives transfer accessions and five new artifact donations.

William J. Clinton Library

The Clinton Library accessioned approximately 10.77 cubic feet of textual material this quarter and received two deeds of gift from donors.

The audiovisual staff received approximately 4.536 cubic feet of internal transfers from the textual staff during holdings maintenance, systematic processing, and FOIA processing this quarter.

George W. Bush Library

In the second quarter of FY 2014, the library received and inventoried a new round of Office of George W. Bush courtesy storage boxes. The library completed inventorying and preservation work on the exhibit design materials that are intent-to-deed from President George W. Bush. The museum received 36 acquisitions.

OPENINGS

Franklin D. Roosevelt Library

This quarter, the library opened to research 360 pages of donated historical materials previously restricted by the donors' deed of gift. Included in these openings were a manuscript of a biography of Whitney Hart Shepardson, a foreign policy expert who served in the Office of Strategic Services; handwritten memoirs and recollections of Adm. John L. McCrea, President Roosevelt's naval aide; and a 1959 letter from Dean Acheson to William Hassett, who was a secretary to both President Roosevelt and President Truman.

Harry S. Truman Library

The library opened for research the Papers of John B. Blandford: appointment books, correspondence, diaries, memoranda, newspaper clippings, photographs, and printed materials mostly relating to his government service during the Presidencies of Herbert Hoover, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Harry S. Truman, and his work for the United Nations. (19,200 pages, 1918–69)

The library opened for research the Papers of Steve Neal: newspaper clippings, book drafts, photographs, publications, research notes, and other materials related to several books about Harry S. Truman that were written or edited by Mr. Neal. (2,400 pages, 1932–2004)

The library opened for research an accretion to the Papers of Philip M. Kaiser: correspondence, reports, photographs, printed materials, speech drafts, memorabilia, and the transcript of an oral history interview mostly relating to his government service in the Labor Department during the Presidency of Harry S. Truman, as an aide to Governor Averell Harriman of New York, and as a diplomat during the Presidencies of John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson, and Jimmy Carter. (5,200 pages, 1935–2005)

The library opened for research approximately 4,000 pages of declassified or partially declassified documents from the Papers of Harry S. Truman (President's Secretary's Files, National Security Council Files, and Psychological Strategy Board Files) and from the Papers of Dean Acheson, Clark Clifford, James Hendrick, and John Ohly.

Dwight D. Eisenhower Library

Re-review of donor-restricted materials resulted in an addition 9,271 pages being opened for research. These materials are from the Stephen Benedict Papers, the Gerald Morgan Records, the U.S. Army Unit Records, and the U.S. President's Commission on Hungarian Refugee Relief. Supreme Headquarters, Allied Expeditionary Force: Communiqués, 1944–45. Papers of James C. Canole. 916.5 cubic feet of records are eligible for "review on demand" and reclassified "open."

Lyndon Baines Johnson Library

Textual archives processing continued. The Archives Staff continued to review material not yet open for research from eligible textual collections.

All necessary processing and preservation was completed for the Records of the National Advisory Commission on Civil Disorders, Embargoed Series, which was produced by the Commission's Office of Investigations, consisting of interview transcripts and law enforcement agency records that were deemed especially sensitive, 35.19 cubic feet. Archives Staff processed and performed preservation on 0.828 cubic feet of the Records of the Commission on Marine Science, Engineering and Resources, a commission appointed by President Johnson in 1966 that submitted its final report to him in February 1969, and the commission’s work was finally terminated in April 1971.

Archives Staff completed the review of an artificial collection, Lady Bird Johnson's Post-Presidential Correspondence with Presidents, Vice Presidents and Their Families. The materials were collected from Mrs. Johnson's Post-Presidential Name File and Post-Presidential Subject File. Correspondence includes invitations to the White House and events at the LBJ Library, congratulatory messages, birthday and Christmas greetings, condolences, and substantive letters on environmental issues, Presidential visits, Mrs. Johnson’s Medal of Freedom, interviews, the Equal Rights Amendment, legislation, foreign affairs, various Commissions, and many other subjects. The collection consists of approximately 3,800 pages (2.16 linear feet) of material in five boxes.

The Archives Staff processed and made available for research the oral history transcripts of John Holton, 26 pages; and J. J. "Jake" Pickle, 19 pages (see Accessions above for biographies).

Richard Nixon Library

The library opened for research the personal paper collections of Jeffrey Donfeld and Jerome Jaffe during the second quarter. Approximately 8,500 pages were made available in response to requests made by onsite researchers.

Gerald R. Ford Library

The library opened the Shirley Peck-Barnes Papers, 1967–2005. The collection contains correspondence, newsletters, newspaper clippings, research materials, and artifacts relating to Shirley Peck-Barnes's involvement with Friends of Children of Vietnam and "Operation Babylift," (the evacuation of orphans from Saigon during the closing weeks of the Vietnam War). After the 1975 Babylift, Barnes remained active in Babylift adoptee matters and eventually wrote The War Cradle: The Untold Story of "Operation Babylift" [5.3 linear feet (ca. 10,500 pages)].

The library completed processing of the Virginia Knauer Files (1967-68) 1969-77. This collection contains materials relating to Virginia Knauer's work as Director of the Office of Consumer Affairs under the Nixon and Ford administrations. The materials document consumer programs, budget development, and implementation of the President's Consumer Representation Plan, as well as related speeches, press releases and publications. The following series from the collection were opened this quarter: Consumer Advisory Council File, 1970 77 [3.7 linear feet (ca. 6,700 pages)], and Budget File, (1967–68) 1969 76 [6.3 linear feet (ca. 11,500)].

The library completed processing of the Robert Anderson Papers (1946) 1965–95. The collection contains materials primarily documenting the public side of diplomacy, especially Henry Kissinger’s public statements and press conferences (1974–75) and Robert Anderson’s later positions as U.S. Ambassador to Morocco and the Dominican Republic. The following series from the collection were opened this quarter: Foreign Service Subject File, (1946) 1965 72 [3.0 linear feet (ca. 5,500 pages)]; Ambassador to Dahomey Subject File, 1972 74 [0.2 linear feet (ca. 400 pages)]; Special Assistant to Secretary of the State for Press Relations Subject File, 1974–75 [4.0 linear feet (ca. 7,300 pages)]; Correspondence File, 1977–95 [1.0 linear foot (ca. 1,800 pages)]; and Contact Cards File, ca. 1969 ca. 1985 [0.8 linear feet (ca. 1,500 pages)].

The library opened the following series from the Arthur Burns Papers: Economic Policy Board, 1974–77 (J Series) [5.3 linear feet (ca. 10,000 pages)]; and Publications (accretion), 1969–77 (S Series) [1.6 linear feet (ca. 3,000 pages)].

The library opened the International Trips series from the Byron Cavaney Files, 1973–77 [12.8 linear feet (ca. 23,500 pages)].

The library opened for research the following series from the NSA. NSC Staff for the Middle East and South Asia Files: Kissinger Trip Files, 1974–76 [0.8 linear feet (ca. 1,500 pages)], and Presidential Briefings Files, 1974–75 [1.2 linear feet (ca. 2,200 pages)].

The library opened for research the following series from the Warren Rustand and William Nicholson Files: Long Range Planning File [4.3 linear feet (ca. 7,900 pages)]; Presidential Briefing Papers File [3.7 linear feet (ca. 6,700 pages)]; Invitations File [2.5 linear feet (ca. 4,800 pages)], and Publications File [0.5 linear feet (ca. 1,000 pages)].

Ronald Reagan Library

The library received permission to open three Freedom of Information Act notices, two Agency Referral/MR/CREST notices, and two systematic notices.

Currently, there are 459,768 pages processed and waiting permission to open.
