Title List Status Codes

The full Title List: A Preliminary and Partial Listing of the Data Files in the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) is no longer available. It has not been updated since 1998. Only sections IV (Department of Defense) and XI (Department of State: U.S. Information Agency) from the out-of-date Title List are still accessible. The status codes listed below are those found in these two sections. For some of the files, the status codes may no longer be applicable. Some of the meanings may no longer be current.

Status/Comment CodesMeanings as used in the Title List
ATTITUDE = The organization of the listings of USIA attitude surveys follows the coding scheme and subject classification established by the USIA and used as part of their numeric identification for each datafile. Their subcategories are not exclusive. For example, "surveys of foreign perception of international strength and security" may also include questions regarding economic issues; likewise, the category "international economic issues" includes many surveys with questions on international political issues, etc.
BIN = Some fields in binary (EBCBIN) format, exact copies only

CURSIT = Dataset is part of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Current Situation Historical System.
E = Written in EBCDIC packed decimal format (EPCPAK), exact copies only
I = Documentation and/or processing incomplete, available as is
INC = Documentation and/or processing incomplete, available as is
NA = Unprocessed, data or technical problems, missing documentation, etc.
NIPS = National (Military Command System) Information Processing System. Data written in NIPS may have variable-length physical blocks, thus only exact copies of data files can be output. Users may need to convert these copies to a contemporary format. NIPS documentation from 1971, 1973 and 1978 is available (9 vols., 1978). Vol. 1 (intro to file concepts) is 155 pp; the general description is 40pp.
NNRM = Related documentation available from Military Reference Branch, Textual Reference Division
ODA = OSIRIS data file, available as is
P = Fully processed
R = Data records or variables cannot be released, check with staff about a public use version.

REF MPCF = Department of Defense contracts from previous years included in the Military Prime Contract File (MPCF), R.G. 330
REFTFARS = VNUS and the Territorial Forces Evaluation System Merged in 1972 and became TFARS
REF330H = See also R.G. 330, Hamlet Evaluation System
REF330 O = See also R.G. 330, OPSANAL: TIRS
REF330P = See also R.G. 330, Phung Hoang Management Information System
REF330T = See also R.G. 330, Territorial Forces Activity Reporting System
REF349 = See also R.G. 349, Records of Joint Commands
REF349T = Another version of TFARS came from R.G. 349, Records of the Joint Commands.
RM = Raw "multi-punched" data. Some USIA datasets include records in which there are "X" or "Y" (or "+" or "-") codes. This kind of multi-punched data will have an "RM" in the status field. However some USIA datafiles have records in which more than one variable is stored in the same character position. In most cases, datasets with this kind of "RM" data also have an "NA" in the status field.
SPSS = SPSS control statements or SPSS export files.
T = Text File
V = Variable-length records; exact copies only
VA = File was transferred from punch cards to tape by the Veteran's Administration (R.G. 015) for a study of former prisoners of war (1980).
WW2 = The electronic records on World War II prisoners of war originated as War Department card records. They were transferred to the National Archives in 1957. The punchcards remain in the textual archives of the National Archives. The electronic copies were made in 1998, with the exception of the two files that the Department of Veterans affairs prepared in the late 1970's. Those two files have "VA" in the status column (see above).
Z = Data in zoned-decimal format; exact copies only
