The role of Lieutenant Dan in Forrest Gump not only kick-started Gary Sinise’s career — it also gave him a new life mission as a passionate advocate for veterans and active duty service members. In his new book Grateful American: A Journey from Self to Service, Sinise tells the story of how he went from a trouble-making kid to a successful actor and eventually a tireless supporter of those who have served our country.

Starring as the 33rd president in the 1995 film Truman earned Sinise a Golden Globe, Emmy and Screen Actors Guild Award. For his service work, Sinise has been presented with humanitarian awards including the Bob Hope Award for Excellence in Entertainment and the Spirit of Hope Award by the Department of Defense. He is also the recipient of the Presidential Citizens Medal, the second-highest civilian honor awarded by the President of the United States.

Please join us for a free public program featuring Sinise in conversation with David Von Drehle, columnist for The Washington Post. Truman Library Institute members receive priority access to RSVP for this event. All others are invited to RSVP beginning February 11 — as space allows. Rainy Day Books will have copies of Grateful American available for purchase at the event or to pre-order in advance.

All events listed in the calendar are free unless noted.
