Created after the greatest tragedy to occur on U.S. soil, the Department of Homeland Security was given the immense challenge to make America safer. By overseeing natural disasters, commercial aviation, counter-terrorism and more, the department would work to ensure that a catastrophe like 9/11 never happened again. Nearly two decades later, is America indeed safer?

Please join us for a special program with Janet Napolitano, who served as secretary of Homeland Security from 2009 to 2013, in conversation about her latest book, How Safe Are We?: Homeland Security Since 9/11. She will be in conversation with Jay Nixon, former governor of Missouri. Napolitano is a former Truman Library Institute board member who currently serves as the president of the University of California and was previously governor of Arizona and attorney general of Arizona. She was the first woman to chair the National Governors Association, and TIME Magazine named her one of the nation’s top five governors.

Truman Library Institute members are exclusively invited to attend the program for free, thanks to a limited number of sponsored tickets offered through Rainy Day Books. Admission to the program for non-members is free with the purchase of one hardcover copy of How Safe Are We? The book costs $29.99 and includes admission to both the program and the autograph session immediately following for up to two people. Admission packages are available exclusively through our partner Rainy Day Books.

All events listed in the calendar are free unless noted.
