Michael Walch will join us to examine the series of laws and policies known as Termination directed at dismantling tribal sovereignty. He will review the various policy revisions along with societal and political changes in the late 1940s and early 1950s which led to the termination policy implementation. He will also discuss President Eisenhower’s observations and concerns. Walch will cover how the policy shortcomings eventually led to the Indian Self-Determination and Education Assistance Act of 1975.
Walch is a shareholder at Kirton McConkie, Utah’s largest law firm, where he specializes in tax planning, business and real estate transactions, business planning, and tax and business matters involving Native American tribes. He is a frequent and popular speaker on tax and Indian law topics at national and local seminars. Walch is currently the President-Elect of the Tax Law Section of the Utah Bar, and is a co-founder and past President of the Bar’s Indian Law Section. He also is the Treasurer and a member of the Board of Directors for the Urban Indian Center of Salt Lake, and has served on many other civic boards and organizations.
