The Long Civil Rights Movement: As Documented within the holdings of the National Archives at Atlanta

National Archives at Atlanta
Atlanta, GA

Friday, February 23, 2018 - 1:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. EST

The National Archives at Atlanta’s Education Specialist Joel Walker will present The Long Civil Rights Movement as Documented within the Holdings of the National Archives at Atlanta Friday, February 23 from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m.  It is open to the public and there is no cost to attend.

The program will feature historical records stored at the Archives such as the little-known but significant 1879 court case, Robinson v. Memphis and Charleston Railroad, that sought to enforce the Civil Rights Act of 1875; the Alabama Dry Dock and Shipbuilding Riot of 1943; and multiple court case records involving the NAACP Legal Team led by a young Thurgood Marshall.  Many other historical topics and records will be highlighted that document the important narrative of the Long Civil Rights Movement in the 19th and 20th centuries. The audience will be asked to take part in a special activity built upon the testimony in Browder v. Gayle, the court case that decided in favor of the supporters of the Montgomery Bus Boycott.
