Research Services: Custody of Federal Records with
Long Term Value
d Three images animate on the screen. First image is of an employee carrying a box of documents. The second image is showing documents being retrieved with a forklift, and the third image is of a visitor receiving help with his documents.

An important outcome of successful Federal records management is the identification of records appropriate for transfer to the custody of the Archivist for long term preservation and access. Records so identified become the responsibility of staff members who formally accession the records, assess their condition, take appropriate preservation action, and make the records available through description processes and actual and virtual research room services. Research Services also provides to the general public substantive lifelong learning experiences that are based on the archival holdings in their custody.
