Less than 1% of the National Archives holdings are classified and must be safeguarded in accordance with existing regulations until properly declassified and released. We manage all aspects of archival processing in addition to exercising safeguarding controls over the records. The National Archives coordinates efforts with other Executive Branch agencies for records needing review for national security information. For those records remaining classified, researchers may request re-review of these records under the Mandatory Declassification Review process of Executive Order 12958, as amended, or under FOIA. Visit (Public Link) NARA and Declassification for more information on these processes.
