JPEG 2000 was created to supersede JPEG, with the biggest difference being JPEG 2000 offers both lossless and lossy compression, while JPEG only offers lossy compression. JPEG 2000 has 17 parts; Part 1 defines the core format and is descended from Quicktime. It was developed in 2000 by the Joint Photographic Experts Group committee and is an open-source, royalty-free format that is continuously maintained. JPEG 2000 is widely used in the community and can be encoded and decoded by many software tools. JPEG 2000 is considered a preferred or acceptable format, depending on the record category, per NARA Transfer Guidance. NARA recommends retention of files as-is since the files can easily be opened and the format is prevalent in the field." ;
