  dcterms:description "Nikon Electronic Format (NEF) is a raw image format native to Nikon digital cameras. It is similar to Nikon RAW (NRW) but NRW is produced by Nikon COOLPIX cameras and NEF is produced by DSLR cameras. Like many camera raw formats, NEF is proprietary but based on TIFF. Raw image files contain unprocessed or minimally processed digital camera image sensor data. While most raw formats use lossless data compression, many Nikon cameras allow users to choose between no compression, lossless, or lossy compression for raw images. To view the raw files, the output from the image sensor must be converted to a photographic rendering (processed) and stored in a viewable raster graphics format such as TIFF or JPEG. Processing may occur in the camera or through a raw file converter. Due to the proprietary nature of the format, NARA recommends transforming to Digital Negative Format (DNG) for preservation." ;
