TAR was introduced for the Unix operating system in 1979 but is now supported cross-platform. Early versions of TAR formats were inconsistent but were standardized as POSIX.1-1988 (ustar) and POSIX.1-2001 (pax). The version most commonly supported now is GNU tar, which is codified but not a formal standard. Each archive file contains a set of objects comprising the content files and metadata including checksums, compression algorithms can vary. The format is non-proprietary, and there are published standards and open specifications. The format is actively maintained and updated by an organization, and tools exist to read TAR files. NARA recommends to retain TAR files as-is, but also extract files from the container." ;
