WMA audio is stored in the proprietary Microsoft Advanced Systems Format (ASF) container. There are four WMA sub-format codecs: Windows Media Audio (WMA), Windows Media Audio Professional (WMA Pro), Windows Media Audio Lossless (WMA Lossless) and Windows Media Audio Voice (WMA Voice). In 2003, Microsoft released new Windows Media Audio version 9 codecs that were not compatible with the original WMA. \"Unspecified\" means that we have not yet identified which versions of codec has been used; these files should be treated as if they possess the risks and limitations inherent in any file in the format family. WMA is proprietary with open specifications and open source tools are available for transcoding. It is recommended to retain WMA files as-is. " ;
