This format was originally created in 1989 and was first implemented in PKWARE, Inc.'s PKZIP utility as a replacement for the previous ARC compression format by Thom Henderson. Over the years a few variants of the ZIP format have been introduced by other companies, variants that were not necessarily fully compatible with any particular ZIP_PK version, with the differences often being related to timing of introduction of new features, such as support for long file names or stronger encryption. The format is non-proprietary, has a published open specification, is actively maintained and updated by an organization or community, and many tools exist to create and read ZIP files. NARA recommends to retain ZIP files as-is, but also extract files from the container." ;
