Some of the codecs remain proprietary and streaming relies on the proprietary Real Data Transport protocol. RealAudio was developed by RealNetworks and first released in 1995. RealAudio can be packaged with RealVideo (.RV) in a RealMedia (.RM) container. RealAudio has never officially been discontinued, but there is little public documentation and it is proprietary and has cross compatibility issues. There are open source tools available for transcoding and replay. Therefore, it is recommended to transform RA files to MP3 or WAV." ;
