Extensions include .heif (pertaining to one or more single images) and .heifs (, pertaining to a sequence of images). The default codec for HEIF is HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding) for compression, resulting in a smaller file size in comparison to formats such as JPEG. The format was developed by the Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) beginning in 2013 and finalized in 2015, with its related standards information further defined via ISO/IEC 23008-12 (MPEG-H, Part 12.) HEIF was adopted by Apple in 2017 and has greater operating system compatibility within Apple iOS and Mac OS compared to other operating systems, such as Windows. While some formats contained within HEIF may be considered open (e.g., AVIF), many are proprietary. Prior to taking any preservation action, efforts to identify the features of the HEIF container can inform subsequent decision-making. An additional complexity is the potential impact to contained information, which may have consequences for digital forensic considerations, e.g., potentially impacting any \"hidden\" data, images, or other elements within. On the condition that the HEIF can be easily rendered, it is recommended to leave as-is; however, transformation to TIFF, JPEG, or PNG can be considered provided that the format's complexities are taken into account and it is determined that the quality and functionality of the HEIF contents are in line with typical renderings of still images." ;
