A similar related extension is .hif (pertaining to HEIF/heix files generated by Canon or Sony cameras.) The HEIF wrapper was developed by the Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) beginning in 2013 and finalized in 2015, with its related standards information further defined via ISO/IEC 23008-12 (MPEG-H, Part 12). HEIF was adopted by Apple in 2017 and has greater operating system compatibility within Apple iOS and Mac OS in comparison to other operating systems, such as Windows. HEIC has been intended to serve as a space-saving format, notably in use by Apple on iPhone devices; as such, it may be considered \"de facto proprietary\" due to Apple's adoption and implementation within a specific yet predominant use context—compatibility and rendering across other applications and systems are generally limited. Prior to taking any preservation action, efforts to identify the features of the HEIF container can inform subsequent decision-making. An additional complexity is the potential impact to contained information, which may have consequences for digital forensic considerations, e.g., potentially impacting any \"hidden\" data, images, or other elements within the HEIF. On the condition that the HEIF/HEIC can be easily rendered, it is recommended to leave as-is; however, transformation of HEIC to TIFF, JPEG, or PNG can be considered provided that HEIF/HEIC complexities are taken into account and it is determined that the quality and functionality of the contents are in line with typical renderings of still images." ;
