This file format is often referred to as JPEG, but JPEG is the encoding and JFIF is the file format. JFIF 1.00 was developed by C-Cube Microsystems and Independent JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) group in 1991 and was only released to a small group of industry representatives before 1.01 was released to the public shortly after. Version 1.02 of JFIF is fully disclosed with an open standard and is the most commonly used version. NARA retains JFIF as-is since the files can be easily opened and the format is prevalent in the field. \"Unspecified\" means that we have not yet identified which version of format has been found; these files should be treated as if they possess the risks and limitations inherent in any file in the format family.
