The AI file format is widely used for storing and exchanging 2D graphics and is proprietary to Adobe Systems. Versions 1-8 of the file format were fully compatible with the Encapsulated PostScript (EPS) format. Beginning with version 9, the AI file format embeds a PDF file; both the .ai and .pdf file extensions may be used. Due to the proprietary nature of the format, NARA recommends transformation to PDF. \"Unspecified\" means that we have not yet identified which version of the format has been found; these files should be treated as if they possess the risks and limitations inherent in any file in the format family." ;
