  dcterms:description "A ROM image is a data file that contains an exact copy of the Read-Only Memory (ROM) chip for a hardware device, typically from a computer or a video game cartridge. ROM files may be created for various purposes, including software emulation, updating the firmware on a certain device, or backing up or archiving ROM data. ROM files are frequently used in video game preservation to use in an emulated environment. By the mid-1990s, personal computers had progressed to the point where it was technically feasible to replicate the behavior of some of the earliest gaming consoles entirely through software, and the first unauthorized, non-commercial console emulators began to appear. Once an emulator is written, it then requires a copy of the game software to be obtained.Typically, this requires the user to make a ROM image, a process known as \"\"dumping\"\" the contents of the ROM chip found in game cartridges. Since compiled binary ROM files are used for different purposes they may use different formatting. Therefore, a ROM file used by one program may not be compatible with another program and difficult to identify. Any format migration for compiled or binary code creates a guaranteed outcome that the code will no longer function, therefore, ROM files should be retained as-is." ;
