  dcterms:description "National Imagery Transmission Format (NITF) is a container format for image and textual data, designed for interchange and interoperability. It was developed by the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) and Federal Intelligence Community (IC) in the 1980s. The file format is a component of the National Imagery Transmission Format Standard (NITFS), which is a suite of standards and specifications first developed to address imagery and imagery-related data interoperability issues. NITF is the default format for interchange between DoD systems, and packages together the image, optional overlays (symbols, graphics, etc.) and information about the image. Despite the similar name, the format is not related to the National Transfer Format (NTF) from the British Standards Institution. NITFS is currently maintained by the NITFS Technical Board and the specifications for versions 2.0 and 2.1 are openly available, however NITF is not widely adopted outside of the DoD and IC. Versions 2.0 and 2,1 are acceptable for the transfer of born-digital photographs per NARA Transfer Guidance. At this time, further research is required to determine NARA's preservation plan for NITF. \"Unspecified\" means that we have not yet identified which version of the format has been found; these files should be treated as if they possess the risks and limitations inherent in any file in the format family." ;
