WMV video is stored in the proprietary Microsoft Advanced Systems Format (ASF) container. There are three codecs: WMV3 (Windows Media Video 9), WMVA (Windows Media Video 10) and WVC1 (Windows Media Video 9 Advanced Profile). WMV version 9 became an open standard in 2006 when the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) issued it as VC-1. \"Unspecified\" means that we have not yet identified which version of codec has been found; these files should be treated as if they possess the risks and limitations inherent in any file in the format family. While there is one codec that has an open specification, these are proprietary and there are concerns related to the application of digital rights management. Therefore, it is recommended to transform WMV files to AVI." ;
