  dcterms:description "Multiresolution Seamless Image Database (MrSID) files are wavelet-based, compressed raster images most commonly used in geospatial applications. The images consist of encoded subsets of image data called \"bitplanes,\" which can be used to render only the desired portion of the image at the scale and image quality requested by the user, without decompressing the entire file. A prototype of the format was initially developed by Los Alamos National Library in 1992, with LizardTech's proprietary commercial version (\"MrSID Generation 2 / MG2\") following in 1998. MG3 added lossless compression and composite images in 2002, and MG4 incorporated multispectral imagery and alpha bands in 2009. Extensis merged with LizardTech in 2018. As of 2025, GeoWGS84 Corp acquired rights to the MrSID format from Extensis. The format is proprietary and does not have an open, published standard. NARA recommends retaining these files as-is and also transforming them to JPEG for preservation." ;
