  dcterms:description "Python Compiled Bytecode (PYC) files contain compiled code written in the Python programming language. PYC files are created when a Python plain text PY script is run for the first time: the interpreter compiles the source code into bytecode to be executed by the Python virtual machine (PVM). A variant PYO file could be created in the 2.x versions when the Python interpreter was run with optimization flags. Python 0.9.1 was released in 1991 followed by 1.0 in 1994 and version 2.0 in 2000. Python 3.0, a major, backwards-incompatible release, was released in 2008, although many of its major features were backported to versions 2.6 in 2008 and 2.7 in 2009. Because of difficulties involving backwards compatibility and transitioning from Python 2.x to 3.x, Python 2.6 and 2.7 continued to receive updates concurrent with development on Python 3.x. Python 2.7 was the last major version of 2.x, and received updates and bug fixes until 2020, when 2.x reached end-of-life. Python has been widely adopted, is not proprietary, and has a published open format specification. Because files containing compiled source code should not be reformatted to avoid affecting the functionality, Python Compiled Bytecode files should be retained in their current format. \"Unspecified\" means that we have not yet identified which version of the format has been found; these files should be treated as if they possess the risks and limitations inherent in any file in the format family." ;
