  dcterms:description "Transport Neutral Encapsulation Format (TNEF) is a proprietary encoding format used by Microsoft Outlook and Microsoft Exchange Server to package email message information. It was first developed in the early 1990s to encode attachments and rich text when transporting messages from Microsoft email products. For non-Microsoft email clients, a message encoded with TNEF will contain a plain text version of the message along with a binary attachment that contains other parts of the original message, such as font information, Object Linking and Embedding (OLE) objects, and regular file attachments. The binary attachment is most often named winmail.dat or win.dat, but the file extensions .tnf or .tnef may also be used for files with TNEF encoding. Tools exist to decode TNEF files and extract attachments. Due to the proprietary nature of the format, NARA recommends converting to PDF or ODT, however intermediary conversion to RTF may be necessary." ;
