PDF is a file format that represents formatted, page-based documents. PDF was developed by Adobe, based in part on the imaging model of the PostScript language, to enable the exchange and viewing of documents in a platform-independent manner. PDF/A has constraints that don’t apply to standard PDF files. Some requirements vary depending on the PDF/A profile (conformance level), but some that are applicable to all PDF/A include no encryption and fonts must be embedded. PDF/A-4 was published in 2020 and is based on PDF 2.0. PDF/A-4 is standardized as ISO 19005-4 and is actively maintained. It deprecated some components from the PDF/A-2 and PDF/A-3 specifications that had since been incorporated into the PDF 2.0 specification. PDF/A-4 supports two conformance levels: PDF/A-4e for engineering and PDF/A-4f for embedded files. PDF/A-4e is defined in Annex B of ISO 19005-4 and supports interactive 3D models for engineering workflows. It is considered the successor format to PDF/Engineering (PDF/E-1). PDF/A-4 is widely supported, actively maintained, and has a published open specification, therefore NARA recommends retaining PDF/A-4e as-is, but also extracting any embedded files." ; dcterms:identifier "NF00901" ; rdfs:label "NF00901" ; wikidata:p1163 "application/pdf" ; wikidata:p1195 "pdf" ; wikidata:p2748 "https://pronom.nationalarchives.gov.uk/fmt/1911" ; wikidata:p3266 "https://www.loc.gov/preservation/digital/formats/fdd/fdd000651.shtml" ; wikidata:p3381 "http://fileformats.archiveteam.org/wiki/PDF" ; wikidata:p973 "https://docs.fileformat.com/pdf/a/" ; wikidata:p973 "https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PDF/A" ; wikidata:p973 "https://forensics.wiki/pdf/" ; wikidata:p973 "https://www.iso.org/standard/71832.html" ; wikidata:p973 "https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q123594858" ; nara:category naraid:DesignVector ; nara:formatName "Portable Document Format/Archiving for Engineering (PDF/A-4e)" ; nara:preservationAction naraid:Retain ; nara:preservationPlan "Retain but extract files from the container" ; nara:riskLevel naraid:Low ; nara:tools "Adobe Acrobat Pro" ; . a owl:Ontology ; .
