Toady's meeting with Sperling and Summers was very productive, in my 
opinion.  We ended up dividing the speech into three main baskets of 
issues -- national economy, auto-specific, and business-specific (though 
much of this was covered under national economy).  We focussed on the 
first basket today, and made a lot of headway.  (This section alone would 
be about three hours long based on today's meeting, but that's how these 
always start.)  I'm going to type up a schematic outline of the issues we 
covered in today's meeting, and I'll send you a copy a bit later today.

Two small items I should raise with you:  

1. The VP wanted me to ask you if the seminar that had once been scheduled 
for him on the Asian financial crisis could be rescheduled sometime before 
the May 8th speech.  I suggested using some of our speech prep time later 
this week, but Summers said he'd need more lead time to get outside 
experts to come, and also thought it should be a weekend or evening 
meeting, if possible.

2. The VP wants to ask POTUS for advice on the speech at their lunch this 
week, and also wants to ask POTUS about the prospect of the VP announcing 
new employment numbers in the speech (I raised this idea with Gene, since 
they come out on May 8th, and Gene was amenable if the numbers are 
decent).  I assume I would get you a brief memo/note/insertion for your 
POTUS lunch memo?
