thanks for the message -- i saw chris' memo -- i couldn't have called that 

one.



related issue -- the admin.'s response to gas price spike ought to include 

bashing the republicans for cuts in energy efficiency research budget -- 

their 97 budget resolution zeroes out doe's funding for this by 1999.   

we're funding research that will innoculate the public against these gas 

price spikes by making cars/trucks MUCH more efficient, and they're 

cutting that budget.



wouldn't this work well with the public?  might the VP do a quick event 

with the PNGV concept cars?  they're very cool, and industry could bring 

them any where.



katie and elgie holstein have tried to pitch the budget issue in senior 

staff without a big sale so far.  katie;s thinking of putting it in vp's 

lunch memo w/ pres. for tomorrow.  

what do you think?  worth pursuing?  any advice as to how to do it?  i'm 

putting together a 1 pg. on the budget differences between us and them for 

you and ron to have. 



 also, vp knows that pngv is doing a media visit at oak ridge this week, 

and wanted to call knoxville paper -- pngv was  the lead story on local 

news last night, and cnn has picked up on the connection between gas 

prices and this research and may use the feed.  i'm going to e-0mail the 

vp w/ an update. i'll send you a copy.
