Here are a few items of interest:

1. Convention. The Kabuki gods are taking their toll. The networks have

cancelled their coverage of the 8-9pm hour on Thurs (for ABC and CBS;

8:30-9 for NBC), because your speech has been moved to Wednesday. Thus,

your brief appearance on Thursday will NOT air on any major network, and

the Convention loses a total of 2.5 hours of combined network coverage.

Moreover, Harry continues to push for the JumboTron during Wednesday, and

we continue to push back.

2. NABJ- Nashville. McNeely confirms that Dwight is an officer of the

group, and could not get him last night, but was going to try to get him

today. But still, the only way to do this is for MEG to travel separately

to Chicago, and she really wants a charter plane. I told Harold that if

the campaign wanted you to do this, they would have to come up with a

charter. Peter says we cannot afford the charter. I think you should

just tell the President "no" on this, unless he really presses you.

3. NYT Editorial. You saw the hit we took. This is why we need to save

all of the airline policy for a big announcement on 9/9, which can take

all the negative and turn it into a positive. This item is raised in your

lunch memo for the President.

4. VFW Press. By contrast, this was very good, including a favorable (if

passing) mention in today's POST editorial on the Dole plan. The hat

definitely worked.

5. Dodd Profile. Of note are Harold's various quotes, both on the

record, and the various obviously Harold off the record quote about how

Dodd is ready for 2000.

6. Welfare. I have totally rewritten your statement to move it to the

left. I think you cannot dodge this event -- it would look just too

obvious.

Finally, I will get you this morning a few added items for lunch.

Thanks.
