Church-Burnings: Insurance Industry



	You may want to update the President on your efforts to involve 

the insurance industry in a national dialogue on racial harmony.  You 

should advise the President that the industry representatives 

enthusiastically accepted your challenge to use their leadership and 

resources to promote racial tolerance and harmony.  Immediately after the 

discussion with you, the meeting participants contacted the presidents of 

all of the major national trade organizations to alert them to this 

challenge and to convene a meeting to discuss the subject.  



	We (your staff) will remain involved in the process and in the 

discussions.  Specifically, we will urge industry leaders to hold this 

meeting by the end of the month.  We will also assist the industry leaders 

in preparing the agenda for this meeting, which should include a 

discussion on how to use their field offices to reach out to various 

communities.  The industry leaders will report back to us on the details 

(and results) of their meeting, and we will follow-up with the industry 

and their suggested plan.
