1) Some time ago the President gave you a memo from Paul London suggesting 

that NPR get involved in reinventing how we collect the economic data that 

goes into the CPI. What he means by that is using more business data, 

getting it electronically and privatizing some of the data collection.  I 

fear that our involvement along these lines would look like the political 

interference in statistical collection (nearly as sensitive as the IRS) 

and that it would never pass the smell test.  This would be much more 

trouble than its worth.



2) Attached is a summary of what federal government employees are doing  

to promote literacy.  Have a look at the administrative leave policy.  

Most agencies seem to have adopted a school.  Given that the federal 

agencies are the District's "business sector" they could probably do much 

more.
