Note: The records indexed here come from a variety of Federal and county courts that handled naturalization proceedings in the territorial period and after South Dakota statehood. Some of the documents were created in other courts (including out-of-state courts) and then submitted to a Federal court along with an applicant's naturalization petition. The information in any given record can be minimal or extensive, depending on the type of document.

This database contains all the naturalization records known to be in the holdings of the Central Plains Region for Dakota Territory and South Dakota. If you do not find the record that you are looking for, we recommend that you contact the court and/or the South Dakota State Archives. Dakota Territory records were split between the state and the Federal Government upon statehood. Also, many courts performed naturalizations well into the twentieth-century, and except in rare cases, these records remain with the court or in the state archives.
