MEMORANDUM TO FEDERAL AGENCY CONTACTS: Guidance for Developing Media Neutral Records Schedules and Notifications to NARA for Previously Scheduled Permanent Records.

I am pleased to announce that NARA has issued guidance to assist you in developing new media neutral records schedules. In addition to this FAQ, NARA has also posted to its web site a new NARA bulletin and several related forms that explain the use of notifications to NARA when agencies implement electronic recordkeeping for records covered by previously approved permanent schedule items. Both the FAQ and the bulletin also describe how agencies may use General Records Schedule 20 to dispose of certain hard copy records that have been converted to an electronic format.

This guidance will assist you in implementing the requirements NARA published in 36 CFR 1225 and is available on the NARA web site at http://www.archives.gov/records-mgmt/initiatives/erm-guidance.html. In FY 2011, NARA will be holding briefings for agencies to further explain this guidance and to answer your questions concerning their implementation.
