Theodore Roosevelt, the twenty-sixth President of the United States, was born in New York City on October 27, 1858. While serving as as Assistant Secretary of the the Navy, Roosevelt resigned his post in order to join the First U.S. Volunteer Cavalry Regiment, also known as the "
Rough Riders," after the outbreak of the Spanish-American War in 1898.
