Statement by Captain Olof W. Eckstrom Made at the Army Hospital at Camp San Luis Obispo, 12/23/1941 (National Archives Identifier: 295012 ); Series: Destruction of the S. S. Montebello, 12/23/1941 - 09/17/1946; Records of the U.S. Customs Service, 1745 - 1982; Record Group 36; National Archives.

On December 23, 1941, the steam tanker S. S. Montebello was sunk by a torpedo from a Japanese submarine in coastal waters near San Simeon, California, as described in this statement by Captain Olof W. Eckstrom. The tanker had departed from Port San Luis Obispo loaded with crude oil for delivery to Vancouver, BC. Although the vessel was a total loss, there were no casualties.
